Without Jennifer Lopez, the Kardashians would never have made the most of their most famous ass-ets.
In the showbiz world of impossibly tall and thin supermodels, JLo made petite and curvy bodies sexy again.
It was rumoured that she had her bum insured for £20million.
Reality TV was new and Kim Kardashian was unknown.
But Jennifer has always been way more than a pin up.
From her first break as a dancer for Janet Jackson, she aced a pop career, established multiple businesses and became a bankable film star with 32 movies and a £316million fortune.
She marks her 50th birthday on July 24, and still looks incredible.
And while Jennifer’s life is a story of hard work and world fame – with a few short-lived marriages, love affairs and scandals thrown in, she can also be credited with/blamed for creating the many-headed billion dollar monster that is the Kardashian family.
Kim Kardashian recently admitted: “My inspiration for everything has been Jennifer Lopez. I became obsessed with glam because of Jennifer.”
Yet unlike the already-wealthy Kardashians, Jennifer Lynn Lopez wasn’t born in to a well-connected family and a moneyed Hollywood lifestyle.
Brought up in the Bronx area of New York City with her two sisters by Puerto Rican parents, nursery teacher Guadalupe and computer specialist David Lopez, the family made sacrifices to pay for her singing and dancing lessons.
Aged 17, she won a role in a film My Little Girl, a small part which had a big impact, because working on the film made her fix her sights on becoming a big star.
Her parents were furious at the idea they felt was too lofty.
Parental rows led to tumultuous years at home before Jennifer left for Manhattan at 18.
Whenever auditions didn’t go well, calling her mum taught her not to feel sorry for herself. Jennifer said: “I thought she’d offer me some sympathy.
Instead, she said, ‘Don’t you ever call me crying! You wanted to be in this business, so you better toughen up!’. And I did.”
It worked. Because soon she toured as a backing dancer with the New Kids on the Block and Janet Jackson.
A starring role in 1997’s Selena, the movie life story of murdered Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, made her an acting talent to watch.
And two years later she had her first pop hit with If You Had My Love.
In February 2000, Jennifer wore the famous green Versace dress to the Grammys.
It was so iconic it launched Google Images.
Few will remember that the man on her arm that night was rapper Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs.
He was her first famous boyfriend, after her 11-month marriage to restaurant worker Ojani Noa ended in 1998.
He gave Jennifer her JLo moniker, and dragged her into the biggest scandal of her life.
On December 28 1999, She and Combs were in a New York nightclub.
Rounds of gunshots went off – one, allegedly, coming from Puffy’s gun.
The pair were arrested and Jennifer spent the next 14 hours in a police cell, sobbing uncontrollably.
Charges against her and Combs were dropped
It was a sharp turning point.
Jennifer realised she had to turn away from fame and re-focus on her career ambitions.
A whirlwind marriage to Cris Judd – a dancer she met on the set of her video for Love Don’t Cost A Thing – followed but ended after nine months.
Jennifer then fell for actor Ben Affleck, 46, on the set of their 2003 flop film Gigli.
They were a huge media sensation, known as Bennifer, and became engaged a few months after dating.
But they broke up before their wedding, which had been booked for September 2003.
Five months later, Jennifer married Marc Anthony – a salsa singer and long-term friend.
With Marc, also 50, it looked as if Jennifer had finally found her soul mate.
In February 2008 they welcomed twins Max and Emme. But in 2011 they split and the pair divorced in 2014.
“The pain hurt so much,” she said. “But I didn’t want what happened to finish me. I wanted to come out of it stronger than before.”
Jennifer was briefly linked to Bradley Cooper, 44, and dancer Casper Smart, 32. But in 2017 she began dating controversial baseball star Alex Rodriguez, 43, and in March they announced their engagement.
She has become close to Kim Kardashian.
The pair have enjoyed movie nights at each other’s houses.
And when pictured together, the similarities are striking – even with the 12-year age gap.
Because despite Jennifer’s extreme highs and lows, there is barely a line on her face and her body is the same as it was when she was half her age.
Daily exercise, as well as avoiding alcohol, caffeine and junk food and staying out of the sun has helped to preserve her sensational looks.
And, just as she has always been more than a red carpet clothes horse, Jennifer knows beauty isn’t just on the outside so uses meditation to keep her youthful glow.
She says: “Everyone wants a miracle cream, but there’s no substitute for feeling great inside. I am youthful and timeless.
“I tell myself that every day, a few times a day. It sounds like such clichéd bulls**t, but it’s not – age is all in your mind.”
