Thomas Markle has accused the Royal Family of ‘not knowing where to put Meghan’s mum’ Doria Ragland, saying he thinks she always looks “uncomfortable”.
The Duchess’s dad, who was married to Doria for eight years, has claimed his ex-wife always looks “like the deer in the headlights” while at royal occasions.
He also said the decision to sit her alone at the Royal Wedding was “one of the dumbest things on Earth” and “made no sense”.
Speaking on a new Channel 5 documentary,
Thomas Markle: My Story was asked about the difficulties he and Doria faced when they started dating after meeting through their jobs at ABC. He said: “Not everybody seemed to approve of this kind of relationship.
“Some people within our families shunned it. In Woodland Hills, a lot of the people would look at Doria thinking she was a housekeeper.
“I saw the problems she was having, I understood that. It wasn’t fair, of course, it wasn’t fair.
“I think she’s going through the same problems now with the Royals.”
He pauses slightly, before continuing: “Oh God, I’ll get in trouble for this. I don’t think they know where to place her.
“She always looks scared. She always looks like the deer in the headlights.
“She never looks comfortable standing there or being there.
“I don’t know if that’s just her or if people are making her feel that way.”
Thomas then goes on to speak about Doria’s role at the Royal Wedding, which he was forced to miss for health reasons.
The mother-of-the-bride traveled with Meghan in the car on the way to the church, before taking a seat alone in the Chapel.
Afterwards, she joined the royal family on the steps as they watched the newlyweds kiss for the cheering crowds.
Thomas, who watched the wedding on TV, said: “The idea of sitting alone at the wedding, was the dumbest thing on Earth. Sitting her in a little corner, it made no sense.
“We did decide to get married, some people were a little shocked.”
The couple went on to have Meghan, with Thomas’s two older children also staying with them.
“When they handed me the baby I was just thrilled. I could not have been happier.
“I looked at her and saw her face and her little fingers went around my finger and that was it, I was in love. I just knew she was going to be special.”
